Who We Are
Planepix founders include two of the world's top aviation photographers, John Dibbs and George Hall. John, producer of the Flying Legends Warbird Calendar, is Europe's foremost aviation photographer. He recently relocated to Seattle where he continues to head up The Plane Picture Company, producing assignment photography, high-level aviation books, calendars, and posters. George, producer of the Air Power Military Jet Calendars, has been photographing aircraft in flight for 30 years, amassing time in everything from blimps to supersonic fighters. He has authored over a dozen books on military and commercial aviation, and he also runs the Check Six stock photo file covering aircraft and military subjects by the world's best air-to-air photographers.
Planepix Featured Photographers
Planepix offers photos by the world's best, and best-known, aviation photographers, including:
John Dibbs | John known for impossibly sharp and clear photo renditions of every aircraft type imaginable -- spotlessly restored warbirds, fabric-covered crates from the dawn of flight, modern military jets, and even the Concorde. Having photographed everything that flies in Europe, he has recently located to Seattle. With his wife Pam and the faithful Rachel Wisby he runs the Plane Picture Company, a full-service assignment and stock source for superb air-to air photography. John uses Canon 35s -- film only -- and a Kenyon gyro stabilizer for matchless resolution.
George Hall | George has been photographing flying machines for 30 years, amassing several thousand hours in everything from blimps to supersonic fighters. Although he has caught rides in almost 100 military types, he concentrates these days on in-air views of airliners and corporate jets. With his long-suffering wife Nicky he operates the Check Six stock photo library in Northern California. George shoots mostly with Contax 645 cameras -- film only.
Katsuhiko Tokunaga | Kats is without question Japan's premiere aviation photojournalist. His shots combine unreal clarity with impossible angles of view. Kats has time in well over 100 military types, and he has flown in almost that many countries and air arms. Raise him on email and a quick answer will come from Russia, South Africa, Chile, Sweden, or Timbuktu. Wife Akiko frequently meets up with the peripetetic Kats in France or Italy. Katsu shoots with both Nikon and Canon systems, mostly digital these days.
Tom Twomey | CDR Tom "Tumor" Twomey, USN, is a multi-thousand-hour F-14 aviator as well as a superb air-to-air photographer. He's famous for catching those shots the rest of us can only dream about -- sunset Tomcats over the Indian Ocean, 8-G vertical knife-fight maneuvers, and self-portraits while trapping on the carrier or during a catapult shot. Tom will soon wrap up a 20-year Navy career and kick back in Northern San Diego with dash-two Lauri and backseaters Ashley and Tommy. Tom is loyal to his Nikon F5s.
Jim Benson | Jim sells equities when he's not flying around with the US Air Force. Jim has a fair amount of time in fighter rear cockpits, but he seems to get his most spectacular shots from the faithful KC-135 tanker. He lives in frigid Montana, so he thinks nothing of chasing cold steel around Alaska or Cold Lake in Northern Canada. His favorite subject? The B-52 Buff, no question. Wife Shelly holds down the fort, along with (last time we counted) 4 junior cadets. Jim uses old-fashioned Canon cameras exclusively. No automatic focus for this guy.
Chad Slattery | Chad shoots aviation with a potent editorial slant. He catches not only the aircraft but also the key people -- pilots, maintenance troops, and support personnel -- all lit with an expert's eye. Many magazines including Smithsonian Air & Space count on him to bring in the goods -- Australian F-111s, Predator Drones in Kosovo, new airliners at Boeing. He works out of Los Angeles when he's not on the road. Chad is a Nikon man, both film and digital.
